Articles of the Day 4/30/14: Saudis Sending a Message
” At the end of last year, the world boasted nearly 140,000 startups, of which more than half were based outside America, according to World Startup Report, a consultancy. Israel is now the most likely place for people to start a tech firm: the country has an estimated 375 startups per million inhabitants, versus 190 in America.”
“The Washington Examiner on Friday outlined a scenario under which the next war in the Middle East may break out as a result of what the outlet described as competing “Israeli and Lebanese claims over a potentially lucrative plot of [underwater] territory,” with the recently formed Lebanese government set to “move ahead with decrees that signal the beginning of bidding for drilling rights” to energy resources underneath disputed waters along the Israel-Lebanon border.”
“The Shin Bet and IDF detained in recent months 10 members of a Hamas cell in the West Bank town of Qalqilya, which was preparing improvised explosive devices for attacking Israel targets. It was composed of 9 Palestinians and an Israeli Arab.”
“In over 3,000 photos reportedly sent in to a small news outlet, thousands of IDF soldiers from all units have expressed their support for a Nahal Brigade soldier who has been dismissed from combat service because he cocked his gun in an incident that was videotaped by Arab youths who threatened and provoked him, in Hevron.”
“Palestinian Arab youths regularly taunt and provoke IDF soldiers while videotaping the incidents, in the hope that a soldier will respond with force. They do so in the knowledge that the Israeli media will broadcast the footage they send them uncritically, even if it has been heavily edited by them to leave out most of the Arab provocations.
This tactic of provocation against the IDF is aided and abetted by B’tselem, an NGO that distributes cameras to Palestinian Arabs for the purpose of catching soldiers behaving in ways that could land them in trouble, and creating anti-Israel propaganda. Their most successful stunt of this type in recent years led to the dismissal of a senior officer, Lt. Col. Shalom Eisner, after he used force against an anarchist. The anarchist was part of a group that sought to disrupt traffic on a major highway and whose members behaved violently, breaking one of Eisner’s fingers.”
Bad precedent set by the IDF here. Soldiers needs to be allowed to defend themselves.
“A Christian minister who was forced off of the Temple Mount by Muslim officials has released a video of support for Jewish rights on the Temple Mount, urging Jews and “the children of Abraham” throughout the world to stand together to end Islamist harassment and discriminatory measures on Judaism’s holiest site.”
“Fatah Central Committee member Tawfiq Tirawi last week posted a video to YouTube of his comments from a pro-terrorist ceremony in Gaza. In his speech mere days before the unity deal, Tirawi said Gaza “will return to the bosom of legitimacy.” No doubts were left regarding Tirawi’s designs to replace Israel with “Palestine,” as he said: “Palestine – Gaza is part of it; the (West) Bank is part of it; and it is Haifa, Yafo, Akko, and it is all of Palestine, which will be an independent state for us, Allah willing.” It is worth noting that the three cities mentioned are on the Mediterranean coast, and not on territory adjoining the 1949 Armistice lines. There, he stated “the two-state solution does not exist. The two-state solution is over. We must return to the option of one Palestine from the [Jordan] River to the [Mediterranean] Sea.” Tirawi’s remarks were made in Gaza’s Khan Yunis during a ceremony for two terrorists imprisoned in Israel; one of them, Diya al-Agha, is serving a life sentence for beating an IDF soldier to death with a shovel in Gaza in 1992. Tirawi added “the homeland…is…all of Palestine, from its [Jordan] River to its [Mediterranean] Sea,” describing a map that effectively wipes out the Jewish state. Palestinian Media Watch translated the video.”
“30 April 2014: Yesterday, the first time ever, Saudi Arabia openly exhibited two of its several dozen Chinese-made Dong Feng-3 (DF-3) multiple warhead (50-100kT) nuclear missiles, received in 1987, in a massive military parade at the northeastern military base in Hafr al-Batin.”
