Articles of the Day 6/12/14: Birth of an Islamic State

Special Report : Iraq Disintegrating

The past 72 hours have seen extraordinary events unfold in Iraq. An Islamic state is being carved out the Middle East right before our eyes. The question is how will borders states react. Some reports say Iran is already participating in the fight. Thousands of Iraqi soldiers have been captured or killed. Iraqi Kurds have mobilized and taken Kirkuk. ISIS now controls large parts of Syria and Iraq. Will the US act? Will Israel act? Will Baghdad fall?

Iranian military forces are fighting ISIS in Iraq. Gen. Soleimani is in Baghdad. Obama may send Iraq arms

“Thursday afternoon, Iran’s most powerful gun, the Al Qods Brigades chief Gen. Qassem Soleimani, arrived in Baghdad to take over the push against ISIS, in the same way as he has managed Bashar Assad’s war in Syria, and pull together the demoralized and scattered Iraqi army.”

ISIS’ advance halted at Samarra

“The Islamic State of Iraq and the Sham’s rapid advance southward to Baghdad after taking control of Mosul just three days ago appears to have been halted outside of the gates of Samarra, home to one of the holiest shrines in Shia Islam. Iraqi security forces in Samarra blunted the ISIS’ assault from the north late yesterday, stopping an armed convoy from entering the city. The military is said to have deployed aircraft while battling the ISIS vanguard.”

Iraq Wants America Back to Fight Insurgents With Air Strikes

“It seems like only yesterday that Iraq’s prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, was celebrating as the last American soldiers left Iraq. Now, with an al Qaeda offshoot threatening to take Baghdad, Maliki’s government is quietly asking at least some troops—specifically airmen and drone pilots—to return. While Iraq’s government is not requesting a surge in U.S. ground forces like the one President Bush ordered in 2007, Maliki’s government has been asking for the U.S. to conduct targeted air strikes and the intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance work to find those targets.”

ISIS Threatens to Invade Jordan, ‘Slaughter’ King Abdullah

“Islamist terrorists in Iraq and Syria have begun creeping toward neighboring countries, sources close to the Islamic fundamentalists revealed this week. The terrorists, who belong to The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria [ISIS — known as DAESH in Arabic] and are said to be an offshoot of al-Qaeda, are planning to take their jihad to Jordan, Lebanon, the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula — after having already captured large parts of Syria and Iraq, the sources said.”

Reports That IRGC Qods Force Commander Suleimani Is In Baghdad To Prepare The City’s Defenses

“Initial reports, including tweets by Iraqis inside and outside of Iraq, indicate that the commander of the IRGC’s Qods Force, Qasem Suleimani, is in Baghdad to coordinate preparations to defend the city.”

Iraq’s Terrorists Are Becoming a Full-Blown Army

“That’s terrible news for America’s few allies left in Iraq as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Sham (ISIS) morph from terrorist menace to a military force capable of over-running an army the U.S. military trained for nearly a decade. It also calls into question the American government’s decision to withdraw the last of its forces from Iraq in 2011. Three years later that withdrawal now appears premature.”

Al-Qaida breakaway pursuing an Islamic state

“BEIRUT — An al-Qaida splinter group that has seized a huge chunk of northern Iraq commands as many as 10,000 fighters and has steadily been consolidating its hold on much of northeastern Syria across the border.”

ISIS expansions in Iraq and Syria bring Middle East to brink of complete chaos

“The stunning take-over signals the beginning of a new and dangerous stage in the turbulence rumbling through the Middle East in the last three years. This is a stage that brings the entire area to the threshold of war between Sunnis and Shiites and between moderates and fanatics within the religious factions. Arab regimes fearing for their survival are still combating Al-Qaeda as well.”

REPORT: Iraq Asked the US to Attack Al Qaeda Camps

“Hours after Al Qaeda forces started to occupy Tikrit, the United States reported that the Iraqi government asked President Obama to consider airstrikes on Al Qaeda training camps. White House: “Our assistance is comprehensive, continuous and increasing.”
